GFWC Public Affairs Department
The Public Affairs department grew out of the American Citizenship Department, established in 1920, when clubwomen were working toward the elimination of racial and religious discrimination. Since 1950, with the official establishment of the Public Affairs Department, clubwomen have addressed such issues as health care for veterans, the 8-hour work day and child labor laws. Through the years, clubwomen’s concern about crime, safety and voter awareness have been reflected in a variety of programs and include a long-standing emphasis on traffic/highway safety programs.
GFWC clubwomen today confront critical issues including crime prevention, domestic violence, home safety and responsible citizenship through the Public Affairs Department. The “Safety Program” educates members and others about community, home and vehicle safety issues, and encourages citizen action initiatives including the Amber Alert emergency response system and Code Adam. GFWC clubs form partnerships with other women’s or special interest groups with mutual objectives to foster women’s civic involvement in all level of government. Clubs are encouraged to organize community forums where candidates can express their views, and clubwomen are encouraged to seek elected or appointed public office. Clubwomen recognize and respect the service of all women and men in the U.S. armed forces and support the Women in Military Service for America (WIMSA) Memorial Foundation.
