GFWC International Affairs Department
While the GFWC International Affairs Department was officially created in 1947, clubwomen’s involvement and interest in international relations has been long-standing. Early activities included work for disarmament, support for overseas troops and, most notably, official representation at the United Nations charter Convention in 1945. This representation, in part, resulted in the inclusion of the UN Commission on Human Rights in the UN Charter. Over the years, clubwomen have generated support for the United Nations, participated in international relief efforts and sponsored numerous international goodwill tours.During the current administration, the “reaching Out internationally” program encourages support of Operations Smile, CARE, World Food day, Global Volunteers, and Heifer Project International. Clubs can work with major international organizations, including the American Field Service, Save the Children, Childreach, and Cure International, an organization that establishes teaching hospitals in the developing world focusing on the medical needs of children. GFWC’s United Nations Program continues to promote international understanding through awareness of United Nations issues, especially those concerning women, children, literacy, human rights and the environment. GFWC supports UNICEF’s goal of eliminating tetanus and encourages clubs to explore ways to become involved with the United Nations development Fund for Women (UNIFEM). GFWC maintains its status as a UN Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Observer.
