GFWC Home Life Department
The stated belief that “the study of household economics is as thorough and systematic a matter as was already devoted to the study of history, art, and literature,” resulted in the formation of GFWC’s Home Economics Committee at the turn of the 20th century. Over the years, clubwomen developed programs to educate rural women, fought for legislation protecting the rights of mothers and children, informed communities on public health issues, and worked to increase opportunities for the physically disabled. GFWC advocated the passage of the earliest food and drug legislation and the establishment of the Food and Drug Administration.
Today, this department’s varied programs include health education, promoting independent living for people with disabilities and building houses with habitat for humanity. The “Helping hands” program educates members and others about organizations that improve the lives of those in need and provides opportunities to offer support for groups including Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) and National Organization on Disability (NOD). The “Immunize now” program emphasizes the need to protect children and adults from preventable diseases through effective immunization programs and encourages citizen action on these issues. GFWC continues to work with numerous national organizations regarding women’s health issues through the “New Horizons in Health” program. Members and others are educated about the most prevalent medical problems affecting women today and are encouraged to adopt proven methods for their own physical health and quality of life.
Clubs are motivated to hold “Speaking of Pain” programs and public forums where attendees have the opportunity to share information and receive additional educational materials about pain management.
